Most entrepreneurs wear so many hats in their businesses that they often lose sight of the fact that many of the functions they carry out are at a level that is below the “Real” value of their time. Resisting the delegation of menial and time consuming tasks places business owners in a position of working decidedly below their pay grade. In their effort to ensure these tasks are completed they fail to realize that while they are tending to these tasks other tasks of greater significance are over looked, postponed, or not even considered.

Many entrepreneurs start their initial journey in business as a sole owner or a solopreneur. As a solopreneur every task from answering phone calls and prospecting new clients to posting on social media and handling all financial responsibilities falls to the owner. This can often lead to what is known as the “Superman or Superwoman” mindset. You know the: I am invincible and can do it all at the same time syndrome. This can lead to unhealthy mental habits especially when a business has grown from sole ownership to a thriving enterprise. This methodology must be broken if the company is to remain sustainable.

As your business grows into an enterprise or a company that has employees other than you, the owner, you must train yourself to rely on the team support that has been built and likely been built by you. Delegation is not only the key to a successful enterprise, but will translate into a profitable enterprise as well. Delegation will reflect positive outcomes within your business culture and overall morale of your employees. When tasks are delegated to team members, especially new and challenging tasks, it gives that employee not only the opportunity to shine, builds their self confidence in performing future tasks successfully, you as their boss the opportunity to assist them in their professional development, and it also demonstrates to other employees that you support the idea of empowerment. It is a great exchange that births loyalty and appreciation for all concerned while also inspiring new perspectives to the tasks of the business.

Delegation is an art that has to be practiced and can sometimes be very difficult for those at the top of the company hierarchy. Deliberately assigning tasks is vitally important; below we have outlined a simple pay grade grid to give examples of how to delegate tasks according to pay structure.

$10 per hour: Talking to qualified prospects, running errands, cleaning, and sorting.

$100 per hour: Emailing prospects and customers, coaching notes and customer follow-up.

$1,000 per hour: Negotiating with prospects, building a funnel for sales, and Building websites.

$10,000 per hour: Executing brilliant ideas, Creating better offers, and Public-speaking.

As shown in the above grid, tasks in the $10 per hour pay grade should most definitely be given to staff members other than owners. These are the tasks that when performed by the owner translate into a host of distraction to a business owner and much of their day becomes consumed with mundane tasks while leaving tasks in the $10k column untouched.

Proper delegation and empowering employees can deliver positive results that will substantially maximize your time, energy, value and most importantly...PROFITS; while also changing the culture of the business resulting in an affirming environment within your company making for a healthy and robust enterprise.
